Tower is a spectacular achievement, both in terms of narration and visuals. I’ve never had the chance to read a book from the prose Dark Tower series, but that didn’t matter. Don’t let the terms “adaptation” or the concept of this being one moment in a larger story trick you into believing it’s only for fans of the Tower franchise. King recruited his assistant Robin Furth along with longtime comic book writer Peter David to tackle this seven-issue mini-series. Furth and David strike an excellent tone and balance between exposition and momentum. Readers discover requisite information in a natural way through dialogue or through the third-person narrator, who speaks to the reader in an incredibly unique voice. You can almost hear a southern drawl in the narration.
Not only is this book one of the best in the non-hero genre, not only is it one of the best comics put out this year, but it’s also one of the best mini-series to be released by Marvel – ever.
