Well it looks like Virgin Comics just could not make it happen in the Big Apple as they have announced that they are closing up shop in New York City. Needless to say the company which only opened their office in New York back in 2006 have not been able to get a product out to the comic industry that has made any real impact. The biggest impact that Virgin Comics and Virgin Animation has had was the arrival of Richard Branson in New York for the opening since then it’s been pretty much down hill since then.

The idea and concept behind the company is actually pretty good. According to their vision statement they are looking to tap into the talent pool over in Asia and bringing it to the masses through films, television, animation, gaming and all forms of entertainment. Like I said it seems like a good premise they just never seem to find that lightning product to get their company going.

It’s not all bad new for the company though. They are apparently just having a temporary shut down for now as the company CEO Sharad Devarajan has stated that they will be relocating to a new office out in Los Angeles. I guess the thought being that if they are closer to hollywood and the entertainment business maybe some of that will rub off on them as well. I mean you figure the company does have one of the world’s most popular billionaires backing the company.

You would think that having Michael Branson backing your company that would generate some interest especially at a time when the entertainment industry can not seem to get enough of anything comic related. Not only is Branson backing them but some of the more famous people that have a creative interest in the company are Jena Jameson, John Woo, Nicolas Cage, Edward Burns, Guy Ritchie and Duran Duran.

Comic book movies are booming right now and the amount of comics that are planned for movies just in the next few years is astounding. I guess I am just a bit surprised that a company that must have a hefty bankroll behind it and big name stars would be struggling in an industry that has been exploding the last few years.

So what do you think? Will Virgin Comics see any success in LA or are they just simply delaying the obvious. If there room for another major player in the US comics market?
